Vino di Anna Bianco 'Nave' 2022

Pale lemon in colour, this wine has grapefruit aromas coupled with white flowers, yellow peach and dried pear. It is dry, and flavoursome with a high acidity, taut palate structure and underlying minerality. Its fine, textural backbone will develop with bottle age resulting in flinty, saline, citrus aromas and flavours.

This wine is made from organically grown, hand harvested grapes from the estate’s highest vineyard, “Vigna Nave” at an altitude of 1100 - 1200 metres, on the north-western side of Mt Etna, above the village of Maletto. Here the volcanic soils are dark grey in colour, sandy and rich in minerals. This 0.4 ha vineyard was planted as an experiment in 2005, 1m x 1m spacing, to bush vines of Carricante, Riesling and Chenin Blanc. Savagnin was recently added. These varieties all express well the sites high minerality and tension. 

Harvest in 2022 was early, being on the 14th September, due to the dry, warm growing conditions of the year. The grapes were direct pressed as whole bunches into a 11hl chestnut barrel where fermentation was spontaneously conducted by indigenous yeasts, without temperature control. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation. It remained on fine lees for 18 months before being bottled without fining or filtering in April 2024.

Vino di Anna is a small, family wine estate situated on the north face of Mt Etna, Sicily. Anna Martens and Eric Narioo have been making natural wines together on Mt Etna for nearly 15 years. Today, with a team of locals, they cultivate organically, eight hectares of terraced land by hand. They make a range of minimal intervention wines, that focus on energy, respect for nature and
reflection of terroir.
