Iva Měřínská Pinot Noir

The Producer

Iva Měřínská is a second-generation winemaker in Žabčice, Southern Moravia. Her father started making wine in 1974 at age 15, and they still work with a tiny vineyard he planted around that time. After a career in HR, Iva felt the pull of the vine in her thirties, studied winemaking in Lednice, and brought a fresh perspective inspired by the natural wine movement and orange wines.

Winemaking Philosophy

The family stopped using sulphur in the cellar from 2015 and made their first qvevri-aged wines in 2017. As Iva says, "that's where our heart is. We love orange wines." Her father agrees: "the world is full of well-made reductive wines, but they all tend to taste the same. Making wines naturally means much more adrenaline in the cellar, but it's well worth it."

Vineyard & Winemaking

Working 1.4 hectares of estate-owned vineyards on quaternary gravel-sand terraces with sustainable farming practices (integrated agriculture with grass between vines). Grapes are hand-harvested and processed in a naturally cold cellar that allows for long macerations. This wine is aged in qvevri shipped from Georgia and buried in Iva's garden, undergoing spontaneous fermentation and remaining unfiltered and unfined with minimal sulfur at bottling.

A family winery founded in 1974, now producing 8-10,000 bottles annually. The proportion of natural wines grows each year as they follow their passion for authentic, terroir-driven expressions. Main varieties: Traminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Saint Laurent, Grüner Veltliner.
