Navatalgordo, Comando G 2023

Navatalgordo is Comando G's village wine from one of the highest and most remote villages in the Sierra de Gredos. It's made from old-vine Garnacha grown at serious altitude – over 1,000 metres – on granite soils that give the wine its characteristic freshness and minerality.

This is the entry point to what Comando G does, but calling it entry-level doesn't do it justice. The fruit comes from multiple parcels around the village, all farmed organically and worked by hand because the terrain is too steep and rocky for machines. These are vineyards that were largely abandoned until Fernando García and Daniel Landi started rescuing them in 2008.

What you get is pure, energetic Garnacha – red fruit, wild herbs, a touch of spice, and that mountain freshness that keeps everything lifted and bright. There's structure here, but it's all about finesse rather than power. The tannins are fine, the acidity is lively, and nothing feels heavy or overdone.

In the cellar, Comando G keeps things minimal – native yeasts, old barrels, no fining or filtration. The focus is on expressing the character of these high-altitude sites, and Navatalgordo does exactly that. It's approachable now but has the balance to age if you're patient.

Serve it slightly cool and let it breathe a bit. It's the kind of wine that shows what modern Spanish winemaking can be – honest, precise, and great value.
