Macchion dei Lupi 'Alos' 2022

Alòs (meaning 'salt' in ancient Greek) is Macchion dei Lupi's 100% Vermentino from a 50-year-old vineyard growing on sandy soil very close to the sea in Tuscany. This is Carlo's idea of a Mediterranean wine, capturing the freshness and salinity of the coast in a bottle.

The proximity to the sea is everything here – you can taste it in the wine's distinctive saline quality and mineral edge. The old vines dig deep into the sandy soils, producing fruit with concentration and character that younger vines simply can't match.

Macchion dei Lupi is located in Tuscany, where Carlo has been making biodynamic wines with minimal intervention since the beginning. His philosophy is simple: if the work in the vineyard is done well, the grapes arrive in the cellar healthy and full of vital energy that should be allowed to express itself.

Alòs undergoes spontaneous fermentation in concrete vats without temperature control, with two days of maceration on the skins to add texture and grip. The wine then ages for 8 months in concrete before bottling. The result is a Vermentino with real character – citrus, stone fruit, white flowers, herbs, and that pronounced saline quality that makes it so distinctive.

There's no fining, filtration, or additives – just punchdowns, macerations, rackings, and creativity. The desire to create wines with a soul has driven Carlo to respect what he calls the genius of the soil and the vintage.
