Pé do Monte is a single-vineyard white wine from Adega do Vulcão, made on the volcanic islands of the Azores in the middle of the Atlantic. The vineyard sits in the mountain foothills, closer to the sea than most, and is planted with some of the oldest vines on the island – 80 to 90 years old. These are the kind of vines that have seen everything and produce fruit with real depth and character.
If you're looking for a reference point, think volcanic Chablis. There's that same tension between fruit and minerality, the same precision and energy, but with an Atlantic saltiness that's all its own. Like all their wines, it's shaped by the unique conditions of these islands – volcanic soils, Atlantic winds, and a climate that's unlike anywhere else in Europe. But Pé do Monte has something extra. The proximity to the ocean gives the wine a pronounced saltiness that runs throughout the palate, and the old vines bring a breadth and texture you don't find in younger plantings.
The winemaking is the same minimal-intervention approach Adega do Vulcão uses across their range, letting the fruit and the site express themselves without interference. You get citrus, stone fruit, that distinctive saline quality, and a volcanic tension that keeps everything lifted and precise. It's the kind of wine that tastes like where it comes from.
Only 1,500 bottles were made, so this is a rare chance to try something genuinely unique. The Azores were once an important wine region, but most of the vineyards were abandoned over the years. Adega do Vulcão is part of a small movement working to revive winemaking here, and Pé do Monte shows exactly why it's worth the effort.
Serve it well-chilled with seafood, grilled fish, or anything with a bit of salt. It's made for coastal food.
